Spring is Imminent It is only a few short weeks now until the wonderful longer days of spring. I feel it hasn't been too bad a winter at all. We have been lucky to have had these lovely crisp mornings with some glorious sun beaming in this week. I hope Mother Nature isn't teasing us! With the Olympics over there will be the reality of back to normal and not much to view on the sports channels. It's good to see our record medal haul, and the NZ teams are winging their way back to NZ today I believe. Yet some are all over the world, like Lulu Sun who is into the second round at Cincinnati. No rest for the elite! So perhaps the PLTC "elite" can get back on court and limber up for spring and the numerous summer events ahead. Let's not mention the All Blacks vs Argentina again…yet we hope they perform better than last weekend. They should really take this out at the “Fortress” this weekend - surely we can't loose at that venue! Go the ABs. We are commencing a very busy part of the year and there is a lot to cover in this issue of The Lawn. Something for everybody - we have Interclub, the Warkworth Challenge, Love Tennis, Mid Week Ladies, coaching, drills & club night, the working bee, bequest information, CTC and soo much more. Please do note down and save any pertinent dates. One of our members was in Europe and passed on some fun photos and updates thanks to Julie Tuner. See below.. |

News from Overseas thanks to Julie Turner " I’m at Wimbledon all week. As a member of NZ’s IC tennis club (international club) I’m here watching our own club member Rhett Purcell playing for NZ. Yesterday the NZ team defeated Japan, today they’ll have tougher opposition playing against the Australians. The weather conditions are perfect and Rhett played a fantastic game yesterday.
I just thought it might be of interest to some club members, especially Mike his Dad. He will be so proud and so he should be. This is such a rare opportunity to play at Wimbledon. I dined on the strawberries and cream. The NZ ladies are playing so I want to see them in action today. It’s a whole weeks tennis watching at Wimbledon.
In my happy place.

Opportunity for PLTC to be a part of the global Centenary Tennis Club (CTC) Thanks to a member who forwarded information about the CTC, PLTC now can become part of this esteemed global network. We have submitted or application, which, if successful, will grant PLTC members the privilege to visit and play at renowned clubs worldwide. These clubs include destinations many of our members travel to, such as the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore & Japan among others. Please see a link for more details to the list of member clubs of the CTC: https://centenarytennisclubs.org/member-clubs/ The CTC represents a collection of clubs that are over 100 years old, feature eight courts or more, have hosted International and ITF events, and have a significant sporting tradition and social impact in their communities. Currently, PLTC already enjoys reciprocal arrangements with Kooyong (Melbourne) and the Fitzwilliam (Ireland), facilitated through introductory letters from our club manager. Upon approval of our application, these privileges would extend globally, allowing PLTC to host members from these prestigious clubs while our own members could enjoy reciprocal privileges worldwide. If you would like to know more about CTC – please visit the main page: https://centenarytennisclubs.org/

PLTC Bequest Information for Members Over the past 12 months, we have received enquiries from people wanting to know how to leave bequests to PLTC. The Committee have formalised a document with information that any member can access via our website. PLTC is very grateful to those donors who have remembered our tennis club previously in their estate planning. This has allowed for many projects, making PLTC the incredibly special tennis club it is today. Bequests contribute significantly to the long-term planning and financial well-being and help us ensure success moving forward. This can be discussed with your lawyer so the appropriate clauses can be inserted into your will. The information can be found on the Website> About Us> Documents. If you would like more information about Bequests- please contact the Club manager: manager@pltc.co.nz |

Obituary GUS GARDNER Another tree has fallen within the club. Gus has passed. He was a tremendous supporter of the club a few years back when it was grass and by all accounts an Auckland Junior tennis champ. Words from one of our members …“he was a wonderful man” .We send all our thoughts to his family at this sad time. This from the notices. “James Graham (Gus). It's with sadness we share that Gus passed away peacefully on Tuesday 6th August 2024 surrounded by his family. Gus was a much-loved husband of 51 years to Ali, brother to Gardy, an awesome Dad to Duncan and Will and an adored Poppa to Joel, Riley, Sarbia, Siara and Jonty. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him over his 87 years. Gus lived life to the fullest and was a kind, generous, legend of a man. Rest in peace old boy.” |
