DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

Sun, 29 Sept 2024 – Sun, 6 Apr 2025
clocks put forward one hour to GMT+13.

"SPRING FORWARD"

Daylight Saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT+12.

Interesting history of DST …….

…..DST is not usually observed near the Equator, where sunrise and sunset times do not vary enough to justify it; conversely, it is often not observed in places at high latitudes where a one-hour clock shift would provide little benefit because of the wide variations in sunrise and sunset times.

Historically, several ancient societies adopted seasonal changes to their timekeeping to make better use of daylight; Roman timekeeping even included changes to water clocks to accommodate this. However, these were changes to the time divisions of the day rather than setting the whole clock forward.

In a satirical letter to the editor of the Journal de Paris in 1784, Benjamin Franklin suggested that if Parisians could only wake up earlier in the summer they would economise on candle and oil usage, but he did not propose changing the clocks.

THE AGM was held this week and a very huge turn-out which is great. It's good to see so many members there to take part in a very important event and support the club and its future.

Firstly a huge thanks Phillipa for her service to the Committee over the past two years, she has given so much of her time, and being secretary is no easy feat! She has made huge headway into making the Bequests a part of PLTC and also the Opportunity for PLTC to be a part of the global Centenary Tennis Club (CTC). Well done Phi, you have left the committee in a positive place. All the best for your new business.

Liz Bell, Philippa Dennis and Grant Waller completed their 2-year term, although Liz and Grant chose to re-stand. There were five candidates for the vacant committee positions:  Liz Bell, Joe Coughlin, Johhny MacAvoy, Grant Waller, Andrew Webster

We thank all of the candidates for putting themselves forward. The three candidates selected were Liz Bell, Johnny MacAvoy, and Grant Waller. Johnny will bring a different perspective to the committee, with specialties in IT, social media and Marketing. Welcome Johnny.

Motion 1.  Changes to the membership year as proposed by the Committee. This was unanimously voted YES.  Accordingly, from 2025, the tennis year will start on September 1 rather than November 1.

Motion 2. A proposed a motion to consider proxy voting. This voting was a tight one nearing a 50/50, yet with a 75% majority needed it was not passed.

Thanks to all who made the night go smoothly, and to Feleti for setting up the club.
